TikTok Shop Fees Explained

Reference · 1,088 words · fees verified 27 August 2026

TikTok Shop's fee looks like the lowest in commerce right up until you account for the way the platform is designed to be used. The referral fee is small. The creator commission, which is the mechanism the whole marketplace is built around, is not, and it is set by a market rather than by TikTok.

So the honest answer to what TikTok Shop costs is that it depends almost entirely on whether you sell your own products or pay other people to sell them for you.

The platform fee

TikTok's US referral fee is 6 percent per order, in place since April 2024. Certain jewelry sub-categories, including diamond, gold, jade, platinum, ruby, sapphire and emerald, were lowered to 5 percent from late October 2024.

There is also a refund administration fee. When a refund, return or cancellation happens after an order is placed, TikTok refunds the referral fee minus 20 percent of it, capped at five dollars per SKU type since May 2025.

Rates read from TikTok's own seller documentation on 27 August 2026.

The fee that actually decides your margin

Affiliate creator commission is set by you, but it is priced by the market, and live selling commands more than posted video because it converts better. Rates in the region of 20 to 30 percent are common for live.

That means two very different businesses share the same platform:

How you sellPlatform feeCreator commissionTotal on $100
You stream yourselfabout 6%noneabout $6.00
Affiliates sell for youabout 6%20% to 30%about $26 to $36

Nearly everyone quoting six percent is quoting the first row while planning to operate in the second.

What else to budget for

Ads. Many TikTok sellers spend on promotion to seed a stream, and that cost sits outside every fee table.

Sample seeding. Creators frequently expect free product before they will promote it, which is a real cost of goods that never appears as a percentage.

Returns. High-velocity impulse selling produces more returns than considered marketplace purchases, and the refund administration fee means a refunded order is not fully cost-free.

Volatility. Not a fee, but it behaves like one. Reach that halves without warning turns a forecast into a guess, and the cost of that unpredictability is real for anyone holding inventory.

How it compares

PlatformSeller pays on $100
TikTok Shop, selling yourselfabout $6.00
ShopBidz$8.80
Mercari$10.00
Whatnot$11.20
eBay$14.00
Poshmark$20.00
TikTok Shop, with affiliates$26 to $36

TikTok occupies both the cheapest and the most expensive rows in that table, which is the clearest possible illustration that a single headline rate tells you very little.

The other rates come from each platform's own published schedule. Note that a marketplace fee buys buyer protection, a dispute process and buyers who arrived intending to buy, none of which the referral fee on a social feed includes.

Who each model suits

Selling yourself on TikTok suits a seller who is good on camera, sells high volume at lower prices, and can tolerate results swinging hard from week to week. At six percent the economics are genuinely excellent while the reach lasts.

Using affiliates suits a brand with margin built into the product and a need for scale it cannot generate itself. At a quarter to a third of the sale it is closer to a paid acquisition channel than to a marketplace fee, and should be judged as one.

Neither suits a seller of considered, higher-value one-off items, where a buyer wants protection and provenance, and where a marketplace at 7 to 11 percent gives you both alongside a room of intentional buyers.

Bottom line

TikTok Shop charges about 6 percent in the US, 5 percent for some jewelry categories, plus a refund administration fee of 20 percent of the referral fee capped at five dollars when an order is refunded.

That is your whole cost only if you never pay a creator. Add affiliates at typical live rates and you are looking at a quarter to a third of the sale, which is more than any marketplace on this page charges. Decide which model you are actually running before comparing TikTok's rate against anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is TikTok Shop's seller fee?
A referral fee of about 6 percent per order in the US, reduced to 5 percent for certain jewelry sub-categories including diamond, gold, jade, platinum, ruby, sapphire and emerald. There is also a refund administration fee equal to 20 percent of the referral fee, capped at five dollars per SKU type, applied when an order is refunded.
Why do people say TikTok Shop is expensive then?
Because most sellers use affiliate creators, and live commissions commonly run 20 to 30 percent on top of the referral fee. That puts the real cost between a quarter and a third of the sale, which is far above any marketplace rate. The 6 percent figure only applies if you do all the selling yourself.
Do I have to use affiliates?
No. Streaming yourself is much cheaper and many sellers do exactly that. The trade is that you depend on the algorithm to find your audience rather than on creators who already have one, which makes week to week results considerably harder to predict.
Is TikTok Shop cheaper than Whatnot?
If you sell without affiliates, yes, roughly six dollars against eleven twenty on a hundred dollar sale. If you use affiliates, no, and not close. Whatnot also includes buyer protection and a marketplace audience that arrived intending to buy, which the referral fee does not.
Are there hidden costs?
Not hidden, but easy to leave out of a comparison. Ads to seed a stream, free samples that creators often expect, higher return rates on impulse purchases, and the refund administration fee on refunded orders all sit outside the headline percentage.
Should I sell high-value items on TikTok Shop?
Usually not as your main channel. Considered purchases benefit from buyer protection, a dispute process and a marketplace where buyers arrive intending to buy, all of which a social feed handles less well. Live auction marketplaces are a better fit for anything where provenance or condition carries the value.
