Mercari Shipping Explained
Shipping on Mercari has one feature that changes the arithmetic and that sellers routinely miss: the platform's 10 percent selling fee applies to the total sale amount including any shipping the buyer paid. That single fact is why two sellers with identical items can end up with noticeably different margins.
The fee sits on top of postage
Because commission is charged on the total rather than on the item price, you pay 10 percent of the shipping as well as 10 percent of the item.
On a $100 item with $10 shipping, the fee is $11 rather than $10, so the effective rate on the item is 11 percent. On a $20 item with $10 shipping, the fee is $3, which is 15 percent of the item price. On a $10 item with $10 shipping, it is $2, or 20 percent.
The pattern is consistent: the cheaper the item relative to the postage, the further the real cost drifts above the headline rate. This is the single most useful thing to understand about selling on Mercari, and it is invisible in any comparison that only quotes the 10 percent.
What that means for how you sell
Bundle. Combining several items raises the item value against a shipping cost that does not rise proportionally, which pulls the effective rate back toward the headline figure and spreads the packing work at the same time.
Prefer light items where you can. A category that ships cheaply keeps the fee base close to the item price, while heavy inventory carries a postage cost that you then pay commission on as well.
Compare honestly against alternatives on this point. Poshmark's standard shipping is paid by the buyer at a flat $7.67 up to five pounds and costs the seller nothing, and no commission is charged on it. On heavy items that is a materially better arrangement than Mercari's, even though Poshmark's headline rate is twice as high.
Deciding who pays
If the buyer pays shipping, the fee base includes it and your effective rate rises as described. If you absorb shipping into the item price, the fee base is the same total anyway, so the commission arithmetic does not change; what changes is how the price reads to a buyer comparing listings.
A single inclusive price generally converts better because it is easier to accept than a price plus an addition at checkout. A separate charge keeps the headline item price competitive in a search-driven listing. Neither escapes the commission, so choose on presentation rather than in the hope of avoiding the fee.
What matters most is knowing your real postage cost per category before you list, so the number you set covers what sending it will actually take.
Pack properly and keep the record
Weigh a representative item from each category once, because the difference between a t-shirt, a pair of jeans and a coat is large enough to turn a profitable sale into a loss if you guess.
Photograph the item before packing, photograph it going into the package, and photograph the sealed package with the label visible. Mercari gives buyers a 72-hour window from delivery to report a problem, so disputes arrive quickly when they arrive at all, and having the record ready matters more than being able to assemble one later.
Ship promptly with tracking. The wait between payment and delivery is where a buyer's impression of you forms, and on a platform with a short reporting window, a fast delivery also means the window opens and closes sooner.
Bottom line
Mercari's 10 percent applies to the total sale amount including buyer-paid shipping, so you pay commission on postage as well as on the item, and the effective rate rises as the item gets cheaper relative to the shipping: 11 percent on a $100 item with $10 shipping, 15 percent on a $20 one, 20 percent on a $10 one. Bundling is the main fix, since it raises item value against a shipping cost that does not rise proportionally. Absorbing shipping into the price does not avoid the fee, because the base is the same total either way, so decide that on presentation instead. Weigh each category once, photograph everything into the package, and remember buyers have 72 hours from delivery to report a problem.
