eBay Alternatives for Resellers

Comparison · 971 words · fees verified 27 August 2026

eBay is the default and it is expensive. For most categories the final value fee is 13.6 percent of the total sale up to seven thousand five hundred dollars, plus forty cents per order over ten dollars, with the range across categories running from 2.5 percent to 15.3 percent. Read from eBay's own Seller Center on 27 August 2026.

The part that costs resellers most is not the percentage. It is that the fee is charged on the whole sale including the shipping you charged and any tax. On cheap heavy items that quietly pushes the effective rate on the item price past 20 percent.

What you would be giving up

This is the part that stops most resellers, and it should be taken seriously.

Search intent. Someone typing a model number into eBay wants that exact object today. That is the most valuable traffic in resale and no other platform in this list generates it at the same scale.

Sold listings as a price history. Being able to see what things actually fetched, not what people asked, is a genuine tool and eBay's is the best available free.

Patience that costs nothing. A listing waits without charging you. A live show that nobody attends costs you the evening.

Reach into niches. Even obscure items find their buyer eventually, which is not reliably true on smaller platforms.

Leaving eBay entirely usually costs a reseller more than the fee saved. Leaving eBay for the wrong part of your stock does not.

Which items should go elsewhere

Cheap and heavy. This is the clearest case. The fee on shipping removes the margin, and moving these to a platform whose fee excludes shipping, or clearing them in a live show, is straightforwardly better.

Items that need demonstrating. Mixed lots, estate jewelry, anything where condition is a conversation. A search results page shows a photograph and a price, which is the worst possible format for these.

Anything you want gone this week. An hour-long live show clears more stock than a month of listings.

High-value collectibles. Whatnot's reduced tiers, currently 8 percent up to fifteen hundred dollars and nothing above in several collectibles categories, can make it dramatically cheaper than eBay on an expensive card.

The alternatives, briefly

ShopBidz. Lowest seller rate here at 8.8 percent, card processing included, live auctions across watches, jewelry, handbags, sneakers, beauty and collectibles. Smallest audience of these, which is the trade.

Mercari. Flat 10 percent, listing marketplace, works without you. The closest thing to a like-for-like swap for passive selling, though its fee includes buyer-paid shipping.

Whatnot. About 11.2 percent, largest live audience, deepest in cards and collectibles, with reduced tiers that make it the cheapest option for some high-value items.

Poshmark. Flat 20 percent, strong clothing audience, hardest rate to justify above a few hundred dollars.

Bottom line

For most categories eBay is the most expensive of these and the only one that reliably puts your item in front of someone searching for it by name. Both of those things are true at once, which is why the answer is almost never to leave.

Move the cheap heavy items and anything that needs demonstrating, since those are the two places eBay's structure works against you. Keep the searchable stock where the searchers are. Most established resellers run two platforms permanently and treat the split as the decision rather than the platform.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest alternative to eBay?
On seller fees, ShopBidz at 8.8 percent, card processing included, then Mercari at 10 percent and Whatnot at about 11.2 percent. All three are cheaper than eBay's roughly 14 percent for most categories.
Why is eBay's fee higher than it looks?
Because it is charged on the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping and handling you charged and any tax collected, rather than on the item price alone. On a low-value heavy item that can push the effective rate on the item well past 20 percent.
Should I leave eBay completely?
Rarely. eBay's search demand is unmatched for items identified by a model number, reference or grade, and giving that up usually costs more than the fee saved. Moving part of your stock, specifically the cheap heavy items and anything that needs demonstrating, captures most of the benefit without the loss.
Which eBay categories have low fees?
The range runs from 2.5 percent to 15.3 percent, so it varies enormously and the average is misleading. Look up your own category directly, since a seller in a low-fee category may find eBay is already the cheapest option available to them.
Is live selling a real alternative to eBay?
For the right stock, yes. It clears volume far faster and competitive bidding can beat a fixed price on distinctive items. It requires you to run a scheduled show, which is the constraint that keeps listing marketplaces in business.
What about selling on more than one at once?
Standard practice and usually correct, provided you never list the same individual item in two places simultaneously. Split by item type, searchable stock on eBay and demonstrable stock live, and let the numbers over a couple of months tell you where the line sits.
