Is Sephora Cheaper Than Ulta?
For the same product from the same brand, usually not by much and often not at all. Both retailers generally sell prestige beauty at the brand's suggested retail price, so a given foundation, serum or fragrance tends to carry the same shelf price at either store. The real differences show up elsewhere: in each store's loyalty program, in the timing and size of sale events, in which brands each carries exclusively, and in the products one carries that the other does not stock at all. So the useful question is not which store has lower prices but which store gives you more value for the way you actually shop.
This guide compares the two on those points, without declaring a winner, because the honest answer changes with your basket. It also explains how to check prices yourself in about two minutes, what to know before relying on any loyalty tier, and a few ways to get a better price on beauty products outside either store.
A note on sources. Each program changes its terms from time to time. The figures below are as of October 2026, drawn from the programs' own published terms where we could reach them and from third-party summaries where we could not. Where sources disagree, we say so or leave the number out. Check the current terms on each retailer's site before making a decision that depends on a specific figure.
Why shelf prices match on the same product
Prestige beauty brands commonly set a suggested retail price, and retailers that carry them generally sell at or near that price. That is why a bottle of a department-store fragrance or a luxury skincare cream tends to show the same number at Sephora and Ulta. A retailer has little room to undercut a brand it wants to keep carrying, and little reason to charge more than a competitor sells the same item for.
This does not hold everywhere.
- Mass and drugstore brands are priced more freely, and Ulta carries many of them. Prices on the same drugstore item can differ between stores and between regular and promotional weeks.
- Retailer-specific lines are sold by one store only. Sephora has its own private label, and Ulta has its own, so there is nothing to compare directly.
- Exclusive brands and exclusive sets exist at both retailers. When a brand is only at one of them, price comparison is moot.
- Sizes and bundles differ. A value set at one store might not exist at the other, so a per-ounce comparison is more honest than comparing sticker prices.
The first step in any price check is to make sure you are comparing the same item, the same size, and the same shade or version.
Where the differences actually come from
### Loyalty programs
Both retailers run tiered rewards programs, and this is where most real savings come from.
Sephora Beauty Insider has three tiers: Insider, VIB and Rouge. According to the program's published terms, VIB status requires spending at least $350 in a calendar year and Rouge requires at least $1,000. Insider members earn 1 point per dollar, VIB members earn 1.25 points per dollar and Rouge members earn 1.5 points per dollar. Points can be redeemed for cash-style discounts: 500 points for $10 off, available to every member, and 1,000 points for $20 off, available to Rouge members. The terms also describe a $100 reward for 2,500 points for Rouge members while supplies last. Sephora's published terms say all Beauty Insider members receive free standard shipping on qualifying online purchases in the U.S. and Canada, and the program includes a birthday gift and seasonal sale events. Third-party summaries put the sale discounts at about 15 percent for Insider, 20 percent for VIB and 25 percent for Rouge, but we could not confirm the percentages from Sephora directly, so check the current event terms.
Ulta Beauty Rewards also has three tiers: a base member level, Platinum and Diamond. Third-party breakdowns put the spending thresholds at about $500 a year for Platinum and about $1,200 for Diamond. Sources disagree on the exact point-earning rates for the higher tiers and on how points convert to dollars, so we are not quoting a rate. What the summaries agree on is that higher tiers earn points faster, get access to perks such as a birthday gift, and, according to one breakdown, keep points from expiring while status is maintained, whereas base-level points can expire. We could not load Ulta's own program page when researching this guide, which is why we point you to it for current numbers.
| Feature | Sephora Beauty Insider | Ulta Beauty Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Tier names | Insider, VIB, Rouge | Member, Platinum, Diamond |
| Annual spend to reach middle tier | $350 (per published terms) | About $500 (third-party summaries) |
| Annual spend to reach top tier | $1,000 (per published terms) | About $1,200 (third-party summaries) |
| Points per dollar | 1, 1.25 and 1.5 by tier (per published terms) | Higher tiers earn faster; confirm exact rates on Ulta's site |
| Free shipping for members | Free standard shipping on qualifying online orders (per published terms) | Varies; confirm threshold on Ulta's site |
| Birthday gift | Yes | Yes |
The headline comparison is that Sephora's tiers are reachable at lower spend, while Ulta's thresholds are higher. That does not make either program better. Whether you actually benefit depends on how much you spend in a year and on what you buy. A person who buys a few prestige items a year may never leave the base tier at either store, and the base tier is where the programs are most similar.
### Sale events
Both retailers run recurring sale periods. Sephora is known for seasonal savings events that discount selected products, with the percentage tied to your tier. Ulta runs its own promotions, including point-multiplier events and periodic sales, and its coupon and event offers change often. Prestige brands can be excluded from some promotions at either retailer, so read the fine print.
Practical points:
- A sale percentage matters most if you can wait. Items you need now may not line up with an event.
- Sale discounts at a store you have a high tier at can beat the other store's price even though regular prices match.
- Some events exclude certain brands, so a discount at checkout may not apply to the item you came for.
- Stacking rules differ, and not everything combines with points redemptions or coupons.
### Exclusive brands and products
Each retailer carries brands the other does not, and that makes some price comparisons impossible. If your favorite brand is at only one store, the loyalty program at that store is the only savings route you have. Before assuming you can price shop, search for the exact product on both retailers' sites.
### Shipping and convenience
Shipping rules affect the real price. Sephora's terms describe free standard shipping for all members. Ulta's free shipping threshold depends on the program and the order, and summaries disagree on the exact figure, so check at checkout. In-store pickup, same-day delivery and return policies also differ and can matter as much as a few dollars on a product price.
How to compare prices in two minutes
- Match the exact item. Same brand, product, size and shade.
- Check the shelf price on both sites. For prestige items they are usually the same.
- Look at your tier. Are you a member at either store? What discount does your tier give in the next sale event?
- Check for current promotions. Look for sale events, point multipliers and coupon codes.
- Factor in shipping. A free shipping tier can beat a small price difference.
- Consider points value. Points can be worth more at one store, depending on what you can redeem for.
- Decide whether you can wait. If a sale is coming, a small delay can be worth more than the difference between stores.
If the item is the same and the price is the same, pick the store where you earn more rewards or where shipping is free.
Which store is cheaper for which kind of shopper?
There is no universal answer, but these patterns are worth thinking about.
- If you mostly buy prestige skincare, makeup and fragrance: shelf prices will probably match, so your savings come from the points and sale events at the store where you have the higher tier.
- If you buy a mix of drugstore and prestige products: a store that carries both in one order can reduce shipping costs and let you earn points on the whole basket. Ulta carries a large drugstore selection.
- If you buy a few items per year: you will likely stay at the base tier of either program, so the difference is small. Choose based on selection and convenience.
- If you spend close to a tier threshold: it can make sense to consolidate purchases at one store, but do not stretch your spending just to reach a tier. Spending more to save money rarely adds up.
- If you buy gifts: watch for gift sets, which may be exclusive to one store, and check return rules.
Ways to pay less on beauty outside either store
Retail stores are not the only place to buy beauty products, and the same price comparison applies elsewhere.
- The brand's own site sometimes offers its own promotions, free gifts or loyalty perks.
- Department stores run their own beauty events.
- Live auctions and marketplaces let you see items on camera and bid. On ShopBidz, for example, you can watch sellers show products live. Casa de Beauty, from Miami, Florida, sells fragrance and beauty cosmetics on ShopBidz, and Miriam's Beauty Pickups is a beauty seller on ShopBidz. Watching a live session lets you see the packaging, the seal and the condition of an item and ask the seller questions before you bid. As with any marketplace, check the product details yourself and compare against the retail price for the same item.
- Dupes and alternatives can cost less. Our guides "Makeup Dupes: How to Find the Real Match" and "Perfume Dupes: What They Really Are" cover how to tell a genuine alternative from a marketing claim.
- Samples and decants let you try a fragrance before you commit to a full bottle. Our guide "Fragrance Decants: What They Are and Why People Buy Them" explains the idea.
Whatever the source, make sure the product is authentic and in good condition. Look for sealed packaging, a batch code that matches, and a seller who answers questions. For fragrance in particular, our guide to checking a perfume batch code is a helpful companion. And remember that beauty products do not last forever, which is covered in our guide to makeup expiration dates.
Mistakes people make when comparing
- Comparing different sizes. A 1.7-ounce bottle at one store and a 3.4-ounce bottle at the other are not the same price. Compare per ounce.
- Ignoring shipping and taxes. A lower price can cost more after fees.
- Chasing a tier. Spending extra to hit a threshold can cost more than the perks give back.
- Letting points expire. Check expiration rules for your tier.
- Forgetting exclusions. Sale events often exclude some brands.
- Assuming one store is always cheaper. It depends on the item, the week and your tier.
Bottom line
Sephora is generally not cheaper than Ulta, and Ulta is generally not cheaper than Sephora, for the same prestige product. Shelf prices tend to match because brands set suggested retail prices. The savings come from loyalty tiers, sale events, exclusive brands and shipping rules, and which store wins depends on your spending, your tier and what you buy. Compare the exact item at both, look at your reward tier and current promotions, factor in shipping, and avoid spending extra just to reach a tier. For anything where the numbers matter to you, check each program's current terms, since both change them.
